An Open Letter to Health Professionals from Dr. Michael Augustson

Dear Health Professional,

Our culture needs improvement! There can be no greater evidence of this than what is happening today with marriage being seriously considered as anything but one man one woman.

As health professionals we deal with pain and suffering every day - some of this the direct or indirect result of the breakdown of the family and same-sex marriage will make this worse. As health professionals we can not continue to let such things happen to the family. As health professionals we can do something about it.

It is in this context that A House Call on the Church was developed. On behalf of The Family Research Institute of Wisconsin, I invite you and your church to participate in some manner in this new program. Your participation will help protect marriage and the family for generations to come. Specifically, such participation may facilitate the passage of one man one woman marriage amendments at the state and federal level. It may also facilitate a more godly outcome to the upcoming elections within the Wisconsin legislature, a US Senate seat or even president.

There are several ways for you to make a House Call, and your choice will likely be a function of your personality, your passion, and the dynamics of your church. Please consider any or all of the following:¬Talk with or send a letter to your pastor, priest or church leadership team. Tell them of your concern of same-sex marriage and your belief that the church has a role to play in advocating for the preservation of traditional one-man/one-woman marriage for our culture. Refer them to the content of this website as it pertains to a House Call on the Church and same sex marriage. Let them know they can use your name in any promotion they might choose to do on this topic.

• Encourage your church to use the bulletin insert prepared for A House Call on the Church. Again, let them know they can use your name in any announcements.

• Deliver a brief verbal message to your congregation on the topic of marriage as one man and one woman. While you are welcome to compose your own personal message consistent with some or all of the points of the bulletin insert, this site contains a couple samples of speaker notes which can be used as written or as edited by you. The bulletin insert as identified above will nicely complement your message.

• Promote passage of an amendment to Wisconsin's constitution defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman by encouraging the signing of The Family Research Institute of Wisconsin's statewide petition.  200,000 signatures are needed by November 15, 2004.

• Talk with other health professionals in your church. Let them know about A House Call on the Church. Perhaps some of them may want to promote the topic either individually or as a group.

• Become a personal advocate for marriage of one man one woman in any of your areas of contact. This may be within your church, work, family, service clubs, or any other settings. Use the bulletin insert as an informational sheet. Ask people to sign the Wisconsin marriage petition. Do what you can to get people out to vote in the September 14 primary and November 2 general elections.

• Consider approaching other churches in your area and encouraging them in any of the ways as listed above.

Proverbs 16: 9 says, "We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps." As health professionals, we make many plans; and we are often very busy with our work, family, and church. Marriage, however, as a sacred institution, is on the verge of being radically redefined–the effects of which we as a society may never recover from. As a health professional you are uniquely suited to play a leadership role in preserving marriage and the family as God intended. Is God calling you to pause from some of your plans and take a few steps with this very important matter? I know God has called me, and it is my hope and prayer that A House Call on the Church will facilitate your response. Remember, time is short.
