Wisconsin state statutes declare, "Marriage is the institution that is the foundation of the family and of society. Its stability is basic to morality and civilization, and of vital interest to society and the state." Chapter 765.001(2)
Wisconsin Family Council's (WFC) role is to bolster this view within our culture. The moral and civil well-being of Wisconsin depends on the health of marriages and families. For this reason, WFC takes a strong stance on preserving and encouraging these two institutions. By upholding marriage and family, the following will be preserved:
- Parents maintaining the right to instill their values in their children
- Religious freedoms and respect for God
- Respect for life as a societal value, including the pre-born and elderly
- Government interference kept to a minimum
Philosophy
Although not a perfect correlation, WFC sees itself as similar to the Old Testament prophets - declaring the truth to the culture. However, unlike many political organizations, WFC's primary purpose is not to win every battle. It believes the battle belongs to the Lord. This allows WFC to pursue integrity and character first, setting an example to those who are watching.
WFC does try to influence the culture, but not at the price of its integrity and character. So, sometimes it wins and sometimes it loses, just like the Old Testament prophets. By maintaining this philosophy, WFC believes it will always win in the long run.
Practice
WFC carries out its philosophy in two ways - by dealing with public policy and by influencing the culture.
Researching and educating public-policy makers and the citizens of Wisconsin to the issues of our day has been a strong point of WFC from the beginning. By providing testimony and research to both groups, through the years WFC has been able to make a difference on many legislative fronts. In other words, WFC is there at the state capitol representing your values and beliefs.
But WFC is not just about public policy and legislation. It also tries to directly affect our culture. By providing literature, speaking to churches, individuals and institutions, producing radio commentaries, and helping to provide seminars and training, WFC is able to spread its message throughout the society.
However, WFC cannot do it all. It is limited by time and resources. Current budget restraints require the ministry to prioritize its services and goals as set by the Board and staff.
