…International organizations vie for hill in Holmen
The Holmen Lion’s Club has maintained a star and a cross on the village-owned Star Hill in Holmen for over half a century. When resident Eric Barnes filed an informal complaint against the display in March of this year, however, the village decided to sell the 990 foot property to the Lion’s Club for $100 in order to avoid legal issues regarding the so-call “separation of church and state.” The Washington DC-based American Humanist Association and the Madison-based Freedom From Religion Foundation each stepped in with bids, $1,000 and $1,200 respectively, in order to prevent the Lion’s Club, which intends to maintain the cross and star on the hill, from obtaining the property. … Marquette’s official newspaper continues to refuse to post Pro-Life ads
The week before spring break, Pro-Life Wisconsin tried to run an ad in The Marquette Tribune, the official paper of the Jesuit Marquette University, encouraging students to make smart choices during spring break. The paper refused, however, because of the information the ad contained about emergency contraception. Now the paper is again refusing to run a 12-page educational insert, called Trapped, about abortion. An independent paper on the Marquette campus, The Warrior, agreed to run the ad. The Tribune did, however, agree to run a Wisconsin Right to Life ad about the pain an unborn baby feels during an abortion.
…Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) goes after Christian vendor display at Veterans’ Administration (VA) hospital in Madison
The Madison based FFRF convinced a Madison VA hospital to remove an “Inspired by Him Christian Bookstore” display from the hospital’s lobby and auditorium. The bookstore had a table with materials set up in the hospital and posters of “The Last Supper” posted on the hospital walls, according to FFRF co-president Annie Laurie Gaylor. More…
…Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin receives over $42,000 from Susan G. Komen for the Cure affiliates
The April 9, 2008 American Life League Stopp Report indicates that the Milwaukee Komen Affiliate of the well-known “pink ribbon” breast cancer organization, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, gave Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin $42,077 during the 2005-2006 fiscal year. During that same time, Komen Madison Race for the Cure gave the Madison Planned Parenthood $30,000 and the Milwaukee Komen Affiliate gave the Milwaukee Planned Parenthood $13,143. A wide body of research indicates that abortion in fact increases a woman’s risk of breast cancer. Click here for a WFC article on the link between abortion and breast cancer.
…Appeals court denies Catholic school’s immunity from employment-related claim
A Wisconsin Court of Appeals denied the Coulee Catholic Schools’ claim that the diocese is immune from an age-discrimination complaint filed by teacher Wendy Ostlund. After her contract was not renewed in 2002, Ostland filed an age discrimination lawsuit against the diocese. The court refused to recognize CCS’s claim that their First Amendment free exercise of religion right exempted the diocese from employment discrimination claims. More…
AROUND THE NATION
…Faculty member cannot participate in student-initiated prayer
A federal appeals court recently ruled that a New Jersey high school football coach cannot bow his head or kneel with his team during a pre-meal prayer and/or student-initiated prayer in the locker room before a game. A district court had originally ruled in favor of a suit Marcus Borden filed for a declaratory judgment against the East Brunswick school district’s policy prohibiting faculty participation in student-initiated prayer. Borden intends to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. More…
…Former lesbian fights to keep daughter
The Virginia Supreme Court will soon decide whether a woman with no biological or legal connection to a young girl will be awarded the girl’s legal custody. When Lisa Miller and Janet Jenkins were lesbian partners, Lisa bore Isabella (now six years old) through artificial insemination. Since then, the couple split up and Lisa left the lesbian life, became a born-again Christian and raised Isabella on her own. Jenkins was awarded parental custody of Isabella by the Vermont Supreme Court (who granted her civil union to Miller in 2000) although Miller and Jenkins are both Virginia residents. More…
…Governor’s veto can’t stop OK legislators from passing ultrasound measure
The Oklahoma legislature voted to override a gubernatorial veto on an abortion measure less than 16 hours after Gov. Brad Henry vetoed the measure. The override vote passed with 13 more votes than were needed in the House and 5 more votes than were needed in the Senate. The bill requires that an ultrasound be administered before every abortion and protects health care providers who object to administering abortions. More…
…Pope has strong message for American bishops
During his trip to the U.S. Pope Benedict XVI boldly admonished American bishops to oppose homosexuality and to address moral issues. Benedict argued in favor of the institution of marriage, “understood as a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman, open to the transmission of life.” The Pope cited moral evils, such as internet pornography, as obstacles to building a strong moral foundation in the lives of young people. Pastor Scott Carson of Grace Church in Burlington, and a WFC Board member, sent his local paper a letter to the editor on this subject. More…
