AROUND WISCONSIN

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi bends House rules to allow Wisconsin U.S. Representative Tammy Baldwin’s domestic partner on Pentagon flight

Politico.com broke the story that Speaker Pelosi made a last-minute exception to House rules to allow Rep. Baldwin’s domestic partner, Lauren Azar, to accompany Baldwin on a tax-payer-funded Pentagon flight for a congressional fact-finding trip in Europe. According to House rules, only spouses or adult-children may sometimes be allowed to accompany congressmen and women on congressional trips. Julaine Appling, CEO of Wisconsin family council was interviewed by an NBC News affiliate Channel 3 reporter about the story. In the interview, Appling questions Pelosi’s motivation for bending the House rules and whether her redefinition of “spouse” to include Rep. Baldwin’s partner violates the Federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which clearly delineates that for federal purposes, spouse means only a married partner of the opposite sex. More…

Tomah high school student penalized for religious expression

A Tomah high school student is suing his school, claiming that his religious expression was censored. The landscape picture the student drew for an art class included a depiction of a cross and the words, John 3:16, “A sign of love.” The teacher, citing a school policy prohibiting depictions of violence, blood, sexual connotations or religious beliefs in artwork, told the student to remove the reference to the Bible and when the student refused, gave him a grade of zero. Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of the student on Friday, March 28, claiming that the school did not censor demonicdrawings and that “students do not shed their constitutional rights at the schoolhouse gate.” More…

Third Party Involvement

Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Madison) sent a letter to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue asking them to audit the expenditures of third party interest groups that got involved in the Supreme Court race. Rep. Steve Nass responded with a press releasing decrying Rep. Pocan’s letter and suggesting that the letter “is a veiled threat to anyone willing to fight Governor Doyle and legislative Democrats in coming elections.” Third party interest groups ran TV and radio spots and sent out mailings for both of the Supreme Court candidates during the course of the campaign. Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, a government watchdog group, lists the expenditures of PAC’s (Political Action Committees) for the two candidates.

Cedarburg teacher’s porn case to come before State Supreme Court for the second time

The State Court of Appeals decided on Wednesday, April 2, to send teacher Robert Zellner’s case regarding viewing pornography on his school computer straight to the state Supreme Court. The case involves the way Zellner was fired and a binding arbitration clause in his contract. In the first case, in 2006, an arbitrator’s ruling that Zellner should have been reprimanded for viewing 1,500 pornographic images on his school computer but not fired was overturned by a Circuit Court judge. AP report about a conservative, Christian young man in Chicago

Ladarius Beal is a rarity at his Chicago high school. The AP article reports that Beal, a 17-year-old, conservative, Republican, evangelical Christian, is an “island of conservatism in a sea of Democrats.” Beal bases his adamant opposition to abortion and support of traditional marriage on his Christian roots. An AP analysis indicates that one-third of young Republicans oppose abortion under all circumstances, compared to 23% of Republicans age 30 and older.

9th Circuit Court rules in favor of a 10 Commandments display and a Kentucky federal district court rules against 10 Commandments display

The infamous 9 th Circuit Court of Appeals passed down a ruling last week that an Everett, Washington 10 Commandments display “does not run afoul of the Establishment Clauses of the United State or Washington State Constitutions.” The Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) funded a friend-of-the-court brief on behalf of the state’s display. Meanwhile, a federal district court in Kentuckypermanently enjoined the display of the Ten Commandments in the Grayson County Courthouse. More…

McDonald’s signs onto the homosexual agenda

The American fast-food icon, McDonald’s, billing itself as kid-and-family-friendly, is now listed on the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) website for an undisclosed financial contribution as a “corporate partner.” Richard Ellis, vice president of communications for McDonald’s USA, was also recently elected to the special interest board on the NGLCC board of directors. WND reports that McDonald’s sent an email in response to WND’s request for comment that confirmed their corporate partner status with NGLCC. More…

Islamic call to prayer from clock tower on University of Miami campus

As part of Islamic Awareness Month, the Muslim Students of the University Of Miami (MSUM) arranged to have the Islamic call to prayer broadcast each Friday afternoon during the month of March from the Richter Library tower on campus. Teresa de la Guardia, Director of International Student and Scholar Services at UM admits that that university would have to “look into other religious organizations on campus” to make them aware of the opportunity to express themselves in a campus broadcast if the call to prayer were to continue beyond the month of March. More…

Abortion, a non-profit industry?

In their 2006-2007 Annual Report, that national-level Planned Parenthood Federation indicates that it has finally surpassed the $1 billion mark in annual income. This non-profit organization received $336 million in tax dollars from the American people, according to Family Research Council ( FRC). Despite the bad publicity occasioned by YouTube videos revealing racist tendencies in Planned Parenthood affiliates and ongoing investigations into PP affiliate abortion providers, the organization continues to receive huge portions of state and federal funding, including $6 million of Wisconsin tax dollars. The Day of Truth is a student-lead event designed to give students an opportunity to peacefully share the truth about homosexuality with their fellow students. More…

Belgium coalition government considers proposal allowing euthanasia for terminally ill minors

A proposal by Belgium lawmakers would allow terminally ill teenagers and those who have severe dementia to take a prescription that would end their lives. The proposal would also allow parents to request that their younger children with an incurable disease be euthanized. The proposed law would expand Belgium’s physician-assisted suicide already available to non-minors and infants who are not expected to survive past age 1. More…
