... Judge rules UW-Madison must award mandatory student fees to student religious group
Last month U.S. District Judge John Shabaz issued a preliminary ruling that UW-Madison must award student fees to a religious student group. The Roman Catholic Foundation filed suit in September 2007 after the university refused to cover costs for printing Lenten booklets, running evangelical training camps and hosting spiritual retreats. Shabaz rejected the university's argument that funding these activities would violate the "separation of church and state;" he said the university's practice of treating types of religious speech differently was illegal. "The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that mandatory student fees must be awarded without regard to the viewpoint of the groups receiving the fees." Alliance Defense Fund represents the student group.
... Algoma pastor challenges the IRS to investigate his church
In an open letter published in The Wall Street Journal on January 16, 2008, Pastor Kenneth Taylor of Calvary Assembly of God in Algoma, WI challenged the IRS to investigate his church because of a November 2006 sermon he preached on the moral implications of a political campaign. The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty represents Pastor Taylor. "Churches and other houses of worship have always been unique places where Americans discuss how their deepest beliefs intersect with their daily lives," said Becket Fund President Kevin Hasson. "The IRS should not be allowed to stop that conversation by threatening to strip a church's tax exemption."
... VCY America radio brings new station on the air in Wittenberg
VCY America, which owns and operates a television station (Channel 30) and numerous radio stations, including WVCY, WVCX and others,
recently brought on the air a new station, WVRN, 88.9 FM, in Wittenberg. VCY America stations and translator stations air Wisconsin Family Council's weekly radio commentary, Wisconsin Family Connection, as well as Home Front. WFC’s CEO, Julaine Appling, hosts the Wednesday edition of Home Front.
... Legislative update
As the current legislative session winds down (the last general business floor period is March 13, 2008), legislators are introducing a flurry of new bills and holding hearings on bills that were introduced earlier in the session. Wisconsin Family Action (WFA), the legislative action arm of Wisconsin Family Council, has posted on its web site a legislative update detailing recent activity.

... Florida marriage protection amendment will be on November 2008 ballot
The Florida Department of State Elections Division has officially certified 649,346 petition signatures to place Florida's Marriage Protection Amendment on the November 4, 2008 ballot. Florida law required 611,009 signatures. A little more than two weeks ago, an audit of petition signatures certified only 589,020 signatures. Florida4Marriage.org campaign state chairman John Stemberger said, "We are grateful to God first, and to our supporters second, for this amazing victory. What our people did was simply remarkable. They collected 92,000 petitions in about 13 days. That is about 7,000 petitions per day. No paid petition collectors could ever match the force of this effort. This is real proof for grassroots momentum for marriage as the union of one man and one woman in Florida."
... Bill affirming America's religious heritage introduced in House of Representatives
Rep. Randy Forbes (R-VA) recently introduced H.Res.888, a resolution "affirming the rich spiritual and religious history of our Nation’s founding and subsequent history and expressing support for designation of the first week in May as ‘‘American Religious History Week’’ for the appreciation of and education on America’s history of religious faith." WI Rep. Paul Ryan (CD-1) is among the 44 co-sponsors of the bill.
... San Francisco Planned Parenthood chapter attempts to force pro-life radio spots off the air
San Francisco's Planned Parenthood Golden Gate Chapter's attempts to force radio stations to stop airing pro-life ads late last month had little effect only because the ad campaign had already stopped. Similar efforts in Seattle last year resulted in radio stations cancelling the pro-life ads sponsored by Second Look Project. Planned Parenthood accuses radio stations playing the ads of being unethical and says the ads spread "lies" and "gross inaccuracies" about abortion. Second Look campaign spokesman Deidre McQuade said pro-lifers in San Francisco should contact the radio stations that aired the ads and thank them for their support of free speech and for giving the pro-life group an opportunity to present their views.
