Around Wisconsin

... Wisconsin bishop changes former neutral stance and publicly opposes "emergency contraception" mandate
Bishop of Madison Robert Morlino wrote to the Wisconsin legislature earlier this week to indicate his opposition to Assembly Bill (AB) 377, the so-called "Emergency Contraception" bill that mandates hospitals to provide potentially abortion-causing drugs to sexual assault victims at their request. A conscience exemption was stripped from the bill before the Assembly passed it. The Wisconsin Catholic Conference had been neutral on the bill. More...

... State representative to introduce bill to remove marriage penalty for disabled persons
Rep. Steve Wieckert (R-Appleton) plans to introduce a bill before the end of the year that will remove the marriage penalty for disabled persons who need health benefits. Under current law, a disabled person receiving medical assistance benefits loses those benefits if he/she marries someone who has more than $2,000 in assets. More...

... Elderly Milwaukee pastor murdered for refusing to give relative money for an abortion
Anne Gordon, a 75-year-old Milwaukee pastor, was murdered last week after she refused to give her grandson, Eric Henry, money for his girlfriend's abortion. He originally told her the money was for a paternity test. Henry has been charged with the murder. More...

... Holidays disappear from Session Schedule on Wisconsin's legislative web site
A Wisconsin Family Council supporter contacted the office about ten days ago pointing out that Christmas was not marked on the 2007-2008 Session Schedule on Wisconsin's legislative web site. We inquired about it, thinking it was an oversight because a number of other holidays were listed, including Martin Luther King Day, Passover, Easter, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving. The calendar was then redesigned to remove names of holidays, with the dates shaded and designated "Important Dates." Then the calendar format disappeared entirely. Now the site shows only a listing of floor periods and other legislative activity. An email this morning from a staffer indicated that probably the calendar was changed/eliminated in order to keep public information centered on legislative activities.

Around the Nation

... Florida marriage amendment headed to November 2008 ballot
The Florida Coalition to Protect Marriage campaign has collected more than enough petition signatures to place Florida's Marriage Protection Amendment on the November 2008 ballot. Organizers will continue to collect signatures until January 28, 2008 so that the remaining signatures can be submitted to the Florida State Division of Elections office by the February 1, 2008 deadline. View from amendment opponents...

... Utah mother threatened with jail for homeschooling her children
Earlier this week Utah Juvenile Court Judge Scott Johansen gave Denise Mafi, a mother who has homeschooled her children for nearly ten years, just one day to put her two oldest children in public school, although she had enrolled them in an online curriculum connected to the public school. Johansen told her she would lose custody of the children if she did not comply with his order. The school district claims it did not receive her homeschooling affidavit for the 2006-2007 school year, although she has a copy of it that she faxed to the district. Failure to file the affidavit is a misdemeanor, which makes her ineligible for a jury trial under Utah law. More...

... Sooner State would just as soon censor Christmas for some city and state employees
Last month Oklahoma City government employees received a memo stating that employees could not display in their workplace any items with religious significance (i.e., nativity scenes, angels, crosses). "Appropriate" displays included "evergreen trees, snowflakes, reindeer, snowmen, and Santa Claus." Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) has filed suit on behalf of the employees. "It's our hope that the city will quickly realize that they are in error in censoring the First Amendment rights of its employees to publicly celebrate Christmas," said ADF Litigation Counsel Amy Smith.  "ADF is prepared to defend people of faith against attacks such as these, wherever they may occur." More...

Oklahoma Attorney General W.A. Drew Edmondson has advised Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) that university employees must refrain from using "Christmas" in oral or written form. The SWOSU has issued a directive in line with that advice. Liberty Counsel has written a demand letter to SWOSU requesting that the unconstitutional policy be reversed. More...

Around the World

... Spanish television network shows abortion on national television
For probably the first time in history, a television network has shown an actual abortion on television. A reporter from the Spanish national network Intereconomia TV posed as a doctor looking for a job at the El Bosque del Madrid abortion clinic. Operation Rescue president Troy Newman stated, "I believe that if we have a straight up debate on abortion, on exactly what abortion is, exactly what it does to the baby, the detrimental effects on the mother, the pro-life movement wins hands down one hundred percent of the time." Newman also said there is an active coverup by American media of the truth of what happens in an abortion. More... [NOTE: Be warned. This is a graphic, disturbing article that reveals the horror of abortion.]
