Around Wisconsin

... Freedom from Religion Foundation receives response
Stewards of Grace Ministries of Brussels, Wisconsin, has responded to Freedom From Religion Foundation’s billboards in Madison that state “Beware of Dogma” and “Imagine no Religion” on what looks like a stained glass window. The Stewards of Grace church sign states: “I Do Not Believe In Atheists. Therefore Atheists Do Not Exist! ...God.”

... Brookfield charitable organization helps make adoption a reality for prospective parents
Since 2005 Family Legacies, a Brookfield, WI charitable non-profit organization, has been providing interest-free loans to Christan couples who lack the financial resources to adopt a child. "By adopting, Christian couples show Christ’s love for orphans. Christ’s love is contagious. This love will leave a legacy of love in your family for generations to come, and in your community as one adoption tends to lead other couples to adopt. Family Legacies wants to help build this legacy in your family."

... WFC joins ADF in friend-of-the-court brief in challenge to WI marriage amendment
Wisconsin Family Council (WFC) and Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) filed a friend-of-the-court brief last week in defense of Wisconsin's Marriage Protection Amendment that passed just over a year ago by a margin of 59 percent to 41 percent. This past July 31 Wisconsin resident Bill McConkey filed suit against Governor Doyle and Attorney General Van Hollen challenging the constitutionality of the marriage amemdment and asking for an injunction to prevent its enforcement.

... Wisconsin Family Action issues press release on ENDA vote
Wisconsin Family Action, Wisconsin Family Council's legislative action arm, issued a press release yesterday in response to the US House of Representatives vote on ENDA. (See ENDA article below.)

Around the Nation

... ENDA passes House of Representatives
The Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), H.R. 3685, passed the US House of Representatives yesterday on a vote of 235 to 184. Only two members of the Wisconsin congressional delegation, Reps. F. James Sensenbrenner, Jr (R-CD 5) and Tom Petri (R-CD-6) voted against the bill. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-CD 1) joined Democrat Reps. Tammy Baldwin (D-CD 2), Ron Kind (D-CD 3), Gwen Moore (D-CD 4), Dave Obey (D-CD 7), and Stephen Kagen (D-CD 8). [CD=Congressional District] ENDA prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of actual or perceived sexual orientation. Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) has promised to introduce the bill in the Senate before the end of the year. More... (Statement from Rep. Ryan on his ENDA vote.)

... Value Voters scramble
Social conservative and religious leaders’ endorsements are scrambled every which way. Over the last several weeks, former presidential candidate Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kansas) endorsed John McCain; Chancellor of Bob Jones University Bob Jones III endorsed Mitt Romney, as did Free Congress Foundation chairman Paul Weyrich; and Regent University president Pat Robertson endorsed Rudy Guiliani.

... Maine school district decision to provide contraceptives to middle school students to be challenged; flawed poll follows controversy
Last month the Portland School Committee approved distribution of contraceptives to King Middle School students without parental knowledge or consent. According to a Portland Press Herald article, only 5 of 134 students, or 4 percent, who visited the school health center were sexually active. The American Center for Law & Justice (ACLJ) wrote a letter to the Portland School Committee last week on behalf of parents who oppose the policy. The Portland School Committee has decided not to reconsider the policy and ACLJ is preparing a legal challenge to that decision.

On November 1 the Associated Press (AP) released a poll it had conducted with Ipsos, a survey-based market research company, purporting to show a 67 percent support for giving birth control to students. The question on which the AP based its 67 percent figure was broken down as follows: Provide birth control only to those students who have the consent of their parents—37 percent; provide birth control to all students who want it—30 percent; not provide birth control to any student—30 percent; don't know—3 percent. Moreover, 63 percent of those polled do not have school-aged children. More...

... Cross-dressing day at California middle school cancelled after parents protest
Last month students at Adams Middle School in Brentwood, CA were encouraged to dress as members of the opposite sex on the last day of "Spirit Week," November 2. Parents learned about the event from flyers posted on the school campus. The school administration told a parent who expressed her concern about the event that she could keep her son home that day if he did not want to participate, but that the event would proceed as planned. Pacific Justice Institute advised this parent to enlist other parents' support and together communicate with school officials. The school canceled the event and encouraged students to wear school colors. [ED note: A rigorous internet search by WFC staff failed to find even one major media article on this situation. More...]
