... Mayville School District adopts policy on controversial student surveys under pressure from Liberty Counsel
The father of a student at Mayville High School in Mayville, WI, objected to a survey his 10th grade daughter was given earlier this year. The content of the survey, dealing with drug use and intimate relationships, concerned the father. The survey, Wisconsin Youth Risk Behavior Survey, is widely used as part of a Centers for Disease Control program. The student’s father, Gary Swain, contacted Liberty Counsel, which provided representation for him. As a result of the efforts of the parents and Liberty Counsel, the school district recently adopted a policy requiring parental notification and an opt-out provision for students and parents when confronted with objectionable surveys. ... Wisconsin Family Action provides testimony on "emergency contraception" mandate bill and "Coercive Abortion Prevention" bill and sends legislative memo on “Bullying Prevention” bill and funeral bill

Earlier this month Wisconsin Family Action (WFA), the legislative action arm of Wisconsin Family Council, provided testimony at public hearings held on two bills: SB 129/AB 377, a bill that would require all Wisconsin hospitals to inform victim of sexual assault about so-called “emergency contraception” and to make it available to her if she requests it (read WFA’s testimony on SB 129/AB 377) and AB 427/SB 218, a bill that would tighten Wisconsin’s Women’s Right To Know Law by requiring abortionists to determine whether or not a woman is being coerced into an abortion (read WFA’s testimony on AB 427/SB 218). (Read more...) Both bills passed out of committee and as of September 25, 2007 were awaiting scheduling for floor action in the Assembly.

WFA sent to the entire state legislature a Legislative Memorandum on SB 42, the proposed "Bullying-Prevention Bill," stating its opposition to the bill. WFA also sent all state legislators a Legislative Memorandum on an amendment to AB 305, a bill that allows most adults to voluntarily name a representative to carry out his/her specific wishes concerning funeral and burial arrangements but would have restricted clergy from being such a representative.

... Madison based atheist group puts up first ever anti-God billboard
The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), the nation's largest association of atheists and agnostics, unveiled what is believed to be the first-ever anti-God billboard on Tuesday, Oct. 2 in Madison, Wis. The whimsical full-color 18-foot billboard mimics a stained-glass window and warns, "Beware of Dogma." The only other wording is the Freedom From Religion Foundation's name and its website. FFRF plans to erect two more smaller billboards in Madison in the coming weeks. Read more…

Wisconsin Supreme Court race barnburner predicted
A new magazine article published by the Wisconsin Policy Research Institute predicts that the April 2008 election for Supreme Court will be a barnburner.

Incumbent Justice Louis Butler is likely to be challenged by Burnett County Judge Michael Gableman. Gableman, was appointed Ashland County DA by Governor Tommy G. Thompson and Governor Scott McCallum appointed him to the Burnett County bench. The incumbent justice, Butler, was not elected, but rather, appointed to the court by Governor Jim Doyle in 2004. ... Three Calif. School Sexual Indoctrination Bills Vetoed
Campaign for Children and Families (CCF), a leading California-based pro-family organization, is thrilled that all three school sexual indoctrination bills have been vetoed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

In late Sept. Gov. Schwarzenegger vetoed AB 606, which would have required school policies promoting transsexuality, bisexuality, and homosexuality under threat of yanking state funding, and AB 1056, which would have spent $250,000 to establish 10 so-called “tolerance” schools promoting all kinds of sexual lifestyles. Gov. Schwarzenegger has until Oct. 14 th to decide to sign or veto five additional anti-family bills passed by the California state legislature. Read more here…

Hate Crimes Update
On Sept. 27, the U.S. Senate voted to add a hate crimes measure to a must-pass defense appropriations bill. If signed into law by the president, the measure will add violence against individuals based on sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, and disability to the list of federal hate crimes. If passed, the federal government would be more involved and have greater power to investigate hate crimes. The measure was passed by the House at the beginning of this year, but had not received a vote in the Senate. Sen. Ted Kennedy added the same language of the House-pproved Hate Crimes act to an amendment to a defense appropriations bill designed to fund the war effort in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Opponents of Hate Crimes Laws say they threaten the right of faith leaders and believers to speak out on the sin of homosexuality. President Bush has vowed in the past to veto the hate crimes amendment, and Senators predict that Bush will not sign the multi-billion dollar Pentagon spending bill with the hate crimes measure attached. ... Christmas battle looming in Berkley, Mich.
Last winter the Berkley, Mich. city council voted to remove a decades-old nativity display from city property under threat of an American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) lawsuit. A grassroots effort, "Berkley Citizens Vote YES to Christmas Holiday Display," has gathered enough signatures to place a proposed Charter Amendment on the November 6, 2007 general election ballot. If the amendment passes, the city must display a nativity scene from Monday after Thanksgiving through January 6, 2008. Read more...
