... Case to withdraw life-sustaining treatment from La Crosse woman dismissed—for now
A woman in her 50's is being kept alive by continuous sedation and a feeding tube at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. Attorneys for her guardian, who earlier filed a request with the court to remove the feeding tube, withdrew that request, saying recent medical opinion had convined them not to proceed at this time. The woman has suffered seven strokes, the last of which resulted in violent dementia; she tears out the feeding tube so sedating her is the only way she can receive nutrition. She has no advance directive, nor is she in a "persistent vegative state," that is necessary in Wisconsin for life-sustaining measures to be discontinued. An attorney for the guardian had argued that the woman's condition is "functionally equivalent" to a "persistent vegative state." Wisconsin Right to Life has sought to intervene in the case. ... Pro-Life Wisconsin demands retraction and correction of defamatory statements by pro-abortion groups
Pro-Life Wisconsin (PLW) has demanded a retraction and correction of false and defamatory statements aired and published by NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin (NARAL) and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin (PPAW). The statements allege that PLW and executive director Peggy Hamill participated in and celebrated a July 28 commemoration and reenactment of Paul Hill's 1994 murder of a Florida abortionist. NARAL also sent copies of its press release to pro-life legislators whom PLW had endorsed or supported financially. Mrs. Hamill and her husband pray each Saturday in front of one of the Milwaukee abortion clinics and had left well before the reenactment began. Mrs. Hamill said, "...I could not be more proud to represent Pro-Life Wisconsin and the thoursands of families who pray and work daily for an end to the violence of abortion. It is nothing less than appalling that NARAL and PPAW would falsely portray a peace-seeking organization as promoters of violence and death. I do hope these organizations avail themselves of this opportunity to fully retract their damaging statements." PLW press release

... Education and information bill on human papillomavirus and vaccine introduced; hearing on bullying bill held
Senate Bill (SB) 252, that would require the Department of Public Instruction in conjunction with the Department of Health and Family Services to provide information on the human papillomavirus and vaccine to school districts, private schools and charter schools and directs school districts and schools to make that information available to parents of 6th to 12th grade students at the beginning of every school year, was introduced August 16, 2007 and referred to the committee on Health and Human Services. Background information ... Resources

A hearing on SB 42, a bill that directs the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) to develop a model bullying policy that will define, prohibit and penalize bullying by students, was held last week. The bill also directs school boards to adopt a policy (the DPI model or some other policy) prohibiting bullying by students and to distribute the policy to all school district students once a year. The Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC) submitted testimony in support of the bill, saying that "Classrooms that are safe and healthy provide the best environment for learning." Around the Nation

... Planned Parenthood challenges Missouri law that would require increased regulation of abortion clinics
Planned Parenthood has filed a federal lawsuit seeking an injunction to keep a Missouri law that requires new medical standards for abortion clinics from taking effect. Any clinic that performs second- or third-trimester abortions or at least five first-trimester abortions a month would be subject to the increased regulations that apply to ambulatory surgery centers. Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missour CEO Peter Brownlie calls the new law "unreasonable" and "burdensome" and says it discriminates against abortion providers. Supporters of the bill say "Women deserve to have their provider of abortion services come under the same careful scrutiny of the personnel, the procedures and the facilities that applies to other providers of medical services." ... New Jersey Methodist camp threatened with government regulation of religious faith and practice
The Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association of the United Methodist Church (UMC Association), the owner of all of the property in Ocean Grove since 1869, refused to allow a same-sex "civil union" at one of its facilities. As a result, the New Jersey Division of Civil Rights is considering designating the privately-owned Ocean Grove facility a place of "public accommodation" to make it subject to government rules and regulations. Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) has filed a lawsuit on behalf of the UMC Association, "The government can't force a private Christian organization to use its property in a way that would violate its own religious beliefs, "said Brian Raum, senior ADF legal counsel. "This action by the state of New Jersey is a gross violation of the First Amendment." Read more..

... American Life League sponsors third annual Pro-Life Memorial Day
October 1, 2007, will mark the third annual Pro-Life Memorial Day, sponsored by American Life League (ALL). ALL chose that date because it is the day the US Supreme Court begins its annual session, a reminder that the US Supreme Court legalized abortion in 1973 that has resulted in the deaths of more than 48 million children by surgical abortion and millions more to chemical abortion. ALL expects individuals from around the nation" to mark the event with local prayer services and community pro-life events." Read more...
