... Domestic partner benefits among policy items removed from budget bill
Late last week Joint Finance Committee chairpersons Sen. Russell Decker (D-Weston - SD 29) and Rep. Kitty Rhoades (R-Hudson - AD 30) issued a letter notifying legislators that the Joint Finance Committee will remove 48 non-fiscal policy items in Governor Doyle's budget recommendations. These non-fiscal policy items will be drafted as separate bills apart from the budget. Among these items is domestic partner benefits for state employees, including University of Wisconsin System administration, faculty and staff.

... Attempts to silence truth on Day of Truth
Nearly 7,000 students nationwide participated in the third annual Day of Truth (April 19) sponsored by Alliance Defense Fund to provide a way for students to counter the aggressive homosexual agenda in schools, including the observance of Day of Silence held on Wednesday, April 18. School officials in Bel Air, MD and Danbury, CT initially prohibited Day of Truth activities, considering them too "controversial" and "counteractive." After Alliance Defense Fund attorneys sent letters to both schools explaining the law, students were permitted to post signs and hold meetings.
... Upcoming Bible reading marathon in Washington D.C.
From April 29 to May 3 people from 100 different churches will be gathering on the west side of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. to read the Bible aloud from cover to cover. The history of the Bible reading marathon goes back to 1990, when a group of Christians read through the entire Bible aloud on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, beginning January 1 at 12:01 a.m. Groups or individuals can also organize Bible reading marathons in their local communities.
... California Compassionate Choices Act or Covert Abuses Act?
A bill euphemistically called the California Compassionate Choices Act (AB 374) that would legalize physician-assisted suicide, is headed for the California State Assembly after the State Assembly Judiciary Committee passed it. Christian Medical Association CEO Dr. David Stevens said "This bill invites patient abuse, prevents investigations of patient abuse and covers up incidents of patient abuse. Instead of being called the Compassionate Choices Act, this bill should be called the Covert Abuses Act." Physicians may prescribe lethal doses of medication to patients who request it, yet the bill "would require that nothing in its provision be construed to authorize ending a patient's life...and would provide that action taken in accordance with the act shall not constitute suicide or homicide." Physicians would also be immune "from civil or criminal liability or professional disciplinary action for participating in good faith compliance with the act." Read more...

... German homeschooler escapes state custody
Melissa Busekros, a homeschooler from Erlangen, Germany, escaped from state custody earlier this week and returned home. She turned 16 on April 23 which gives her broader rights and more say in her custody. She was removed from her home by police in February and taken to a psychiatric ward after a social worker and judge ruled that she had a "school phobia." Homeschooling has been banned in Germany since the rule of Adolf Hitler; the ban continues to be enforced. Other homeschooling families have been subject to fines as high as $4,000 (so far); the state has frozen their bank accounts and will take their homes to pay further fines. Home School Legal Defense Association founder Michael Farris says, "The philosophy that the government knows best how to raise children is really becoming a worldwide phenomenon. I think Germany represents the edge of the night that's coming." Read more...

... Wisconsin Family Council provides testimony opposing "emergency contraception" hospital mandate
Today Wisconsin Family Council CEO Julaine Appling provided testimony in opposition to Senate Bill 129 (SB 129), a bill that forces all hospitals without exception to offer and provide so-called "emergency contraception" to sexual assault victims. Pro-Life Wisconsin Legislative Director Matt Sande also provided testimony in opposition to the bill. Wisconsin Family Council testimony ... Wisconsin Catholic Conference testimony ... ... Wisconsin Family Council represents abstinence-only position on UW panel
Darryn Beckstrom, director of research for Wisconsin Family Council, participated in a panel discussion on sex education hosted by a UW-Madison student group. She represented the "abstinence-only" approach, noting that we tell kids not to do drugs and asking why the same message in sex education cannot be taught. The abstinence-only panelists also pointed out that sex education needs to include emotional and spiritual aspects and that sex is a part of a much bigger concept, not a hobby or form of entertainment.
